Ibn Taymiyyah [d. 728 AH] on the later-generation who dabbled in Kalam [Theological Rhetoric] and professed to have a better understanding of the faith than the Earlier Salaf.

Taqī ad-Dīn Ahmad ibn Taymiyyah – “How, then, would the best generation [the companions] of this Ummah have less knowledge and wisdom [particularly knowledge about Allaah ﷻ and the rulings concerning His verses and Names] than those who are debased in comparison to them [i.e the later generation kalamists]? How would these young [infantile] dabblers in philosophy, the followers of the Indian and the Greek [philosophers], these inheritors of the Majus and the Mushriks, the inheritors of those most misguided among the Jews, Christians and Sabeans and those of their likeness… [*how would these foul later-generation philosophers] have more knowledge about Allaah ﷻ, than the inheritors of the Prophets and the People of the Qur’an and Faith?”
