The decision of Imam al-Bukhārī [d. 256 AH] to compile his Ṣaḥīḥ

al-Khatib al-Baghdadi [d. 1071 CE]: Imam al-Bukhari said, “I was with Ishaq b. Rahawayh, and our companions appealed, ‘If only you would compile a summarised collection of the traditions of the Prophet ﷺ…’ [the idea then] entered my heart… “I then committed myself to compiling this work [“Jaami’ as-Sahih” i.e Sahih al-Bukhari].”
