The Messenger of Allaah ﷺ told her, “If you do not find me, then go to Abu Bakr…”

Inferences were made both explicitly and tacitly to the role Abu Bakr (رضي الله عنه) was to play after the passing of the Messenger ﷺ — a woman approached the Messenger and he ordered her to return to him, and she said, “What if I was to not find you?” – as if she’s implying death – then the Messenger ﷺ responded, “If you should not find me, go to Abu Bakr.”

→ Sahih al-Bukhari 3659

One can even argue the role was not predetermined in a will, because when the Messenger ﷺ was on his death bed he ordered Abu Bakr to lead the people in prayer – three times.
