Ibn Mandhūr [d. 1311 CE] said, “Red (حمراء) [is a term used to describe] the white complexion of the Non-Arabs. The Arabs would describe white non-Arabs, like the Romans/Persians, as having a *red complexion [حمراء]. The term [أبيض] is NOT used for complexion.”

Shakir in his commentary of the Musnad of Imam Aḥmad bin Ḥanbal states, “The usage of the word [أحمر] means white complexion. Tha’lab [al-Baghdadi] was asked about the specification of the word [أحمر] in this context and he replied, “the Arabs do not use the word [أبيض] to refer to complexion… rather, if they intended complexion, the would use the term [أحمر].”
