Muhammad ibn Sa’ad [d. 845 C.E] – Conversation that occurred between Fudayl ibn Marzūq, and ‘Umar and Hussayn, the sons of ‘Ali ibn al-Hussayn [“Zayn-ul-‘Abideen” – 4th Imam]

Muhammad ibn Sa’ad [d. 845 C.E], in his book Tabaqat ibn Sa’ad, records a conversation that occurred between Fudayl ibn Marzūq, and ‘Umar and Hussayn, the sons of ‘Ali ibn al-Hussayn [“Zayn-ul-‘Abideen” – 4th Imam]:

Fudayl narrates: “I asked, ‘is there currently among you Ahlul-bayt an individual whom obedience to is [divinely] mandated, you know him to be so, and any individual who dies not knowing him to be so, has died a death of ignorance?’ They [‘Umar and Hussayn] replied: ‘No, by Allah, no such thing exists among us. Anyone who attributes this to us has lied.'”

[Fudayl] continues: I then said to ‘Umar ibn ‘Ali [to clarify further]: May Allah have mercy upon you. [Is this not] a position you claim that was for ‘Ali [ibn Abi Talib], [one that] the Prophet [ﷺ] entreated. Then it was for al-Hasan, [one that] ‘Ali [ibn Abi Talib] entreated. Then it was [a position] for al-Hussayn, entreated by al-Hasan. Then it was for ‘Ali ibn al-Hussayn, [one that] al-Hussayn entreated, then it was for Muhammad [al-Baaqir] ibn ‘Ali, [a position] entreated by [your father] ‘Ali [ibn al-Hussein]?’

[‘Umar ibn ‘Ali] replied “By Allah, my father died counselling nothing [concerning this matter]. May Allah destroy them [those who claimed this].”
